The People’s National Convention (PNC) is facing a leadership crisis as David Asibi Ayindenaba Apasera, the party’s 2020 presidential candidate, has announced plans to contest the election of Bernard Anbataayela Mornah as the party’s 2024 flagbearer in court. Apasera claims that the PNC congress, which saw Mornah’s election, was illegal and vows to work towards selecting a legitimate presidential candidate for the December 7 general elections.
Mornah was elected flagbearer on September 7, securing 1,138 votes against Apasera’s 216. However, Apasera disputes the outcome, citing a court injunction that barred the party from holding the congress. He questions the Electoral Commission’s decision to conduct the elections despite being served with the injunction and argues that the process was neither free nor fair.
Apasera’s challenge casts doubt on Mornah’s candidacy and raises concerns about the party’s ability to field a legitimate candidate for the upcoming elections. The dispute highlights the need for a resolution to ensure the PNC’s participation in the December polls.
