Election 2024: Mahama criticizes NPP’s road infrastructure claims, calls out deceptive politics

Former President John Dramani Mahama has sharply criticized the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its alleged failures in the road sector. As the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahama disputed the NPP’s claim of constructing 12,000 kilometers of roads, labeling it as false.

He pointed out that despite the government’s assertions, many roads across the country remain in deplorable conditions. Speaking at Anyaa Sowutuom in the Greater Accra Region, Mahama, who is seeking a comeback after his defeats in 2016 and 2020, highlighted the poor state of roads in the area as evidence of the NPP’s underperformance.

“During a session in Parliament, the President claimed that the government had constructed 12,000 kilometers of roads, suggesting that such a distance would stretch from Accra to Japan if traveled by plane. If they had indeed achieved this, residents of Anyaa Sowutuom shouldn’t be complaining about their roads,” Mahama remarked.

He further highlighted the deteriorating conditions of roads in Agape, Antieku, and Ablekuma New Town, arguing that the NDC is the true nation-builder capable of executing long-term projects. He criticized the NPP for branding his administration as incompetent, despite the challenges they faced, and asserted that the NPP’s performance over the past eight years has been lacking.

Mahama also accused the NPP of engaging in dishonest politics to mislead voters, contrasting this with the NDC’s commitment to integrity. “We prioritize integrity and avoid making promises we can’t keep, unlike the NPP, who resort to deception for political gain. The NDC is focused on investments that bring long-term benefits to Ghanaians, such as infrastructure, clean water, electricity, quality healthcare, and education, ensuring a lasting legacy of development,” he concluded.
