Ekon Community Threatens Demo Over Sea Erosion Neglect

Chiefs and residents of Ekon, a coastal suburb in the Central Region’s Cape Coast South Constituency, have issued a stern warning to President Akufo-Addo and the Cape Coast Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hon. Ernest Arthur, to address the devastating sea erosion in their community. The lack of sea defenses and breakwaters has led to the destruction of over 150 homes, crippling the fishing industry, and causing significant economic hardship.

At a press conference, Chief Nana Kwame Edu Ababio (II) expressed frustration and disappointment, stating that despite repeated calls for action, Ekon has been neglected while neighboring towns like Moree Community and parts of Cape Coast have received the necessary protections. The Chief emphasized that the community can no longer wait for promises to materialize and has given the government until November to take concrete action.

Chief Fisherman Nana Tawiah II echoed the sentiments, declaring “no sea defense and breakwater, no vote” in the upcoming general elections. He stressed that the community has lost faith in empty promises and demands tangible results.

The situation in Ekon is dire, with tidal waves rendering beaches inaccessible to fishermen, resulting in substantial income loss and economic suffering. The community is united in their demand for immediate action, and if their pleas continue to fall on deaf ears, they will be forced to take to the streets in protest.

The Ekon community’s plight serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for effective coastal management and protection measures. The government must prioritize the welfare and livelihoods of its citizens and take swift action to address the sea erosion crisis in Ekon.
