The Accra-Tema motorway, a vital link between Tema’s industrial hub and Accra’s metropolitan center, is set for a major transformation after nearly six decades of service.
In a sod-cutting ceremony held on Monday, August 26, President Akufo-Addo announced plans to expand the motorway into a modern 10-lane highway. This significant upgrade aims to reduce traffic congestion and enhance safety, making the motorway more accessible and efficient.
The 27.7-kilometer project will be carried out in three phases. The first phase will focus on rehabilitating the existing motorway, the second phase will upgrade the George Walker Bush Highway, and the third phase will address improvements to the Nsawam Road.
The project will also include the reconstruction of critical interchanges, the installation of toll plazas, footbridges, and other essential infrastructure developments.
President Akufo-Addo emphasized that this ambitious project, undertaken through a public-private partnership with a wholly Ghanaian-owned company, demonstrates the growing capacity of local enterprises. He stated that the motorway’s expansion is a significant step towards building a modern, prosperous, and well-connected Ghana.
The President urged all stakeholders to ensure the project is completed on schedule and within budget, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development and national progress.
