Information Minister challenges Mahama’s claims on regional hospital projects

The Minister of Information, Fatima Abubakar, has refuted claims that former President John Mahama initiated and completed any regional hospital during his tenure. This statement came in response to a remark made by Dr. Grace Ayensu Danquah, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, during a panel discussion on Metro TV. Dr. Danquah asserted that Mahama, the NDC flagbearer for the December 7 general election, was responsible for the construction of a hospital in Abetifi, Eastern Region.

Minister Abubakar, who was a co-panelist on the program, quickly dismissed the claim, stating that Mahama cannot be credited with the execution of the project.

“Take it from me, former President Mahama has not started and completed a single regional hospital. There is a list of nine hospitals [legacy projects], and there is a list of five hospitals [legacy projects]. There are Euroget projects, and I know Abetifi Hospital to be one of the projects that come together with Kumawu Hospital and Fomena Hospital projects. I know this for a fact as a legacy project,” Abubakar asserted.

She emphasized that these legacy projects were not initiated by Mahama, adding, “I am saying they did not start with former President Mahama.”

The current Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration is actively working on several hospital projects under the Agenda 111 initiative. This ambitious project involves constructing 86 district hospitals, two regional psychiatric hospitals, and a regional hospital in the Western Region. The initiative aims to provide 101 standard 100-bed district hospitals with accommodations for doctors and nurses in districts lacking such facilities, as well as rehabilitating the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital in the Western Region and building additional regional and psychiatric hospitals.

The entire Agenda 111 project is estimated at $1.75 billion and is at various stages of completion across the country.
