Media mogul Oprah Winfrey made a surprise appearance at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, delivering a powerful speech that criticized former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance. The legendary talk show host, who once considered Trump as a potential presidential candidate, slammed his divisive rhetoric and policies.
Winfrey began by emphasizing the importance of adult conversation and civilized debate in democracy. She took a veiled shot at Trump, saying, “We know all the old tricks and tropes that are designed to distract us from what actually matters… These are complicated times, people, and they require adult conversation.”
In another subtle jab at Trump, Winfrey addressed his comment about only needing to vote once. “You know what? You’re looking at a registered independent who’s proud to vote again and again and again because I’m an American. And that’s what Americans do. Voting is the best of America.”
Winfrey also targeted Vance, criticizing his comments about “childless cat ladies.” She used an analogy about a house fire to emphasize the importance of unity and support. “When a house is on fire, we don’t ask about the homeowners’ race or religion… We just try to do the best we can to save them. And if the place happens to belong to a childless cat lady, well, we try to get that cat out, too.”
Following Winfrey’s speech, the Trump campaign released a 2000 letter she wrote, suggesting Trump would make a good president. Winfrey had previously acknowledged considering Trump as a potential candidate 23 years ago but has since changed her stance.
Winfrey emphasized the importance of values and character in leadership, saying, “Decency and respect are on the ballot in 2024. And, and just plain common sense over loyalty to any individual.” Her surprise appearance and powerful speech left a lasting impact on the DNC audience.
