Gyakie Joins the Chorus: Ghanaian Singer Calls for Reduced Data Prices

Gyakie, a renowned Ghanaian singer, has added her voice to the growing chorus of calls for reduced data prices in Ghana. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Gyakie emphasized the need for affordable and accessible data for all Ghanaians, highlighting the benefits it would bring to both consumers and telecommunications companies.

Gyakie’s argument is straightforward: cheaper data would attract more subscribers, leading to higher profits for telecommunications companies. Her post resonated with many Ghanaians, who praised her for speaking out on an issue that affects a large portion of the population.

The high cost of internet data in Ghana has sparked a national outcry, particularly among the youth, who see affordable internet as a gateway to numerous opportunities. Despite the rapid digital transformation globally, many young Ghanaians find themselves sidelined due to exorbitant data prices. This has led to a spirited digital campaign, led by tech influencer Tech in Twi and prominent creator Kwadwo Sheldon, urging the government and the National Communications Authority (NCA) to take immediate action to reduce data costs.

In response to the growing pressure, the NCA released a statement earlier in July, assuring Ghanaians that data prices would drop soon. The director of the NCA claimed that the implementation of a new network would lessen operational expenses, leading to reduced data costs. However, despite this promise, Ghanaians on social media continue to lament the high costs of data, indicating that more needs to be done to address the issue.
