Chief Justice Unveils Small Claims Court

Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo has launched the Small Claims and Debt Recovery Courts in Ghana, aiming to tackle the growing backlog of debt-related cases in district courts. The initiative, inspired by Bills MicroCredit, will operate in 12 selected district courts in Accra and Kumasi.

The pilot program seeks to address the significant increase in small claims filings, with the courts sitting daily, including Saturdays. The Chief Justice emphasized the need for urgent action to clear the backlog and ensure efficient debt recovery.

The courts will operate in two regions: Greater Accra (8 courts) and Ashanti (4 courts), with designated Saturday and weekday afternoon courts. Chairman Richard Quaye of Bills MicroCredit praised the Chief Justice and Judicial Service for their commitment to protecting investors’ interests.

The Small Claims and Debt Recovery Courts aim to provide a faster and more effective solution for debt recovery, promoting economic growth and stability in Ghana.
