Veteran Ghanaian actress Grace Omaboe, popularly known as Maame Dokono, recently disclosed in an interview on GTV how her switch from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) led to the termination of her popular television show, ‘By the Fire Side.’
Maame Dokono recounted her active involvement in politics, initially joining the NDC during the tenure of the late Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings. During this time, she developed a close friendship with former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings and received substantial support for her show.
She explained that Nana Konadu provided crucial sponsorship and logistical support, including a van and camera equipment, for ‘By the Fire Side.’ However, this support was withdrawn following her decision to align with the NPP.
Maame Dokono narrated, “NPP was doing a programme in the Central Region, and a lot of the artistes were behind Nana. We were singing and doing other things. Sometimes before Nana mounts the speech, I address the crowd, and I had so much support then. So, they asked me to join the NPP, and I did.”
The actress revealed that the switch in political allegiance led to an unexpected and abrupt end to her professional relationship with Nana Konadu. “Because of the switch in political parties, she took everything from me. You know she was the one sponsoring ‘By the Fire Side’. She gave me a van, the camera, but as soon as this change came, she took everything.”
Reflecting on the outcome, Maame Dokono expressed surprise and disappointment at the turn of events, stating, “I thought because I was going to that side to push for women, it was not going to be a problem, but it really turned our relationship bitter.”
