Obaapa Christy launches ‘Sing Like Obaapa’ contest to support emerging gospel artistes

As part of her dedication to the industry that has nurtured her career, renowned Ghanaian gospel singer Obaapa Christy has introduced a new contest titled ‘Sing Like Obaapa’ to discover and support three emerging gospel talents. This initiative also marks the second anniversary of her eatery, Obaapa Sen.

The contest’s finale will take place during the anniversary celebration on Monday, August 5, 2024, at the restaurant, located next to Fisherman’s House in Odorkor – Kaneshie. Participants were invited to submit their entries in the weeks leading up to the event, and on the day, they will perform Obaapa Christy’s songs for two minutes each. Six contestants will advance from the initial round.

In the second round, the competition will heat up as five finalists showcase their skills by performing their chosen songs. A panel of expert judges, including Noble Nketia, Fred Kyei Mensah, and Reverend Josephine Agyei, will select the top three winners.

According to Obaapa Christy’s manager, Nana Kwame Darkwah, these winners will receive a special recording opportunity. “Obaapa Christy’s management will write songs for the three winners and assist them in recording with a producer of their choice,” he stated.

With over two decades in the music industry, Obaapa Christy is celebrated for hits like ‘W’agye Me,’ ‘Yare Yeya,’ ‘Onto Nko,’ ‘Ma Enye Yie,’ and ‘The Glory.’ She has received numerous accolades, including Gospel Artist of the Year and Song of the Year at the 2007 Ghana Music Awards. In 2008, she was honoured with a national award by former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
