The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Sefwi-Wiawso constituency took to the streets to express their outrage and discontent against the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin. The protest was sparked by the Speaker’s decision to eject their Member of Parliament, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, from the parliamentary chamber.
During a heated parliamentary session, Dr. Afriyie engaged in a verbal exchange with Speaker Bagbin, which the latter deemed “rude” and unacceptable. Consequently, the Speaker ordered Dr. Afriyie to leave the chamber, citing his behavior as disruptive and disrespectful. However, the NPP members in the Sefwi-Wiawso constituency saw this action as an affront to their representative and the people they serve.
The protesters, led by NPP Constituency Secretary Emmanuel Atta Marfo, condemned the Speaker’s actions as “unfortunate” and “grossly disrespectful” to their MP and the people of Sefwi-Wiawso. They demanded an unqualified apology from Speaker Bagbin to Dr. Afriyie and the constituents, asserting that his behavior was unacceptable and biased.
The protesters have given Speaker Bagbin an ultimatum of one week to render an apology, failing which they have threatened to take further action, hinting at more protests and potentially disrupting parliamentary proceedings.
Dr. Afriyie, the embattled MP, has maintained that he did nothing wrong and sees no reason to apologize for his actions during the parliamentary session. He has renounced the apology issued on his behalf, further fueling the tensions between the Speaker and the NPP members.
