The support base of the former Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the Bono Region, as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the Election 2028 is building up, with the NPP members of the Bono Regional Council of Elders endorsing his candidature.
The NPP has scheduled January 31, 2026, for its presidential primary to elect the party flagbearer, however 12 out of the 16 members of the Bono Regional Council of Elders of the Party have openly declared their support, canvassing votes from delegates for Alhaji Dr Bawumia to lead the party in the Election 2028.
Mr Kofi Kyeremeh, the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders, at a meeting, said Alhaji Dr Bawumia who was also the Election 2024 Presidential Candidate of the Party was well marketed with proven records.
He indicated that failure of the NPP to present Alhaji Bawumia as the party’s Election 2028 flagbearer, could cause the Party dearly in the race, and urged the delegates to “think-twice” and make informed decision when they got to the ballot in 2026, and endorsed Dr Bawumia for the task.
“Re-electing Dr Bawumia to lead the NPP in the next General Election is in the supreme interest of our great party, and it will be extremely difficult for us to regain political power if we fail to present him for the elections,” he advised.
Mr Yaw Dabie Appiah Mensah, a member of the Bono Regional Council of Elders of the NPP stressed that with Dr Bawumia, it would be easier for the NPP to win the Election 2028 and advised the delegates to approve him.
“In fact, we need Bawumia again because majority of Ghanaians know and have approved him now. It will therefore be politically suicidal for the NPP if we fail to give him another mandate to lead the party.” he warned.
Mr Mensah, popularly known as “Oga,’ a former regional organiser of the NPP in the then Brong-Ahafo Region said “Our decision to support Bawumia is based on the information we have gathered.
It’s our desire and wish that the NPP regain political power in the Election 2028 and we believe that it’s only Bawumia that can make that dream come true,” he stated.
Nana Atta Afena, also a member of the Bono Regional Council of Elders of the NPP said the party had a precedent and asked the delegates to support Alhaji Dr Bawumia’s bid to lead the party for an overwhelming victory in the next General Election.
“As a great party under a strong elephant, I think its members and delegates must prioritise the interests of our great party. We shouldn’t just follow some aspirants blindly because we have a history and a precedent,” he stated.
Nana Afena emphasised that the members of the regional council of elders remained committed to supporting Alhaji Dr Bawumia to turn round the electoral fortunes of the NPP in the Election 2028.
