Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to mobilize in large numbers to secure a decisive first-round victory in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Reflecting on the party’s past challenges, Kufuor stressed the detrimental effects of voter apathy and internal conflicts, which he believes have hindered the NPP’s success in previous elections.
Speaking during a live broadcast, he highlighted how divisions within the party during the 2020 elections significantly affected their performance. “Some chairmen colluded to unseat certain Members of Parliament, leading to these individuals running as independent candidates. This cost us greatly—we lost about 18 seats, and that didn’t help us as a party,” Kufuor lamented.
He also recounted the party’s narrow loss in the 2008 elections as a lesson in the importance of voter turnout. “We won the first round but lost the second. Many supporters who abstained from voting later regretted it, but by then, it was too late,” he noted, adding that apathy had paved the way for the opposition’s victory.
Kufuor further emphasized the significance of governance continuity, referencing the NPP’s achievements under his administration. “We secured an interest-free loan from China to dualize the road and construct the Nsawam bypass. We also completed the Suhum to Apedwa road. Unfortunately, when we left office, these projects were neglected by the NDC government,” he remarked.
He urged party members to unite and avoid repeating the mistakes of the past, calling for a strong and cohesive effort to win the 2024 elections outright.
